What Is Modern Classic Interior Design?

Everyone is talking about modern classic interior design and its timelessness and ability to merge with our modern lifestyles, but what is modern classic when we look at interior design?

When discussing interior design almost everyone knows what modern is and has a fair understanding of classic but what do you know about modern classic and how easily you can introduce this design ethos into your home if you want a look that is both timeless and elegant and not held hostage to fads and trends.

What is Modern Classic in interior design?

Trends are ever-changing and it is never a good idea to decorate your home on what is popular today and out-of-date tomorrow. The only true way to decorate a home so that it comes across as a seamless blend of everything you love is to select a style that reflects your personality or lifestyle. Over the decades we have become familiar with design styles such as Traditional, Mid-Century, Retro, Contemporary, Cottage, Rustic or Country and even Shabby Chic; all these design styles follow a set of guidelines as to how you can decorate in any particular one to have a home that looks gorgeous but these design styles also change over the years to incorporate opinions and, with increasing popularity, become an additional style.

As an example, Boho or Bohemian was originally a phrase used to describe unconventional or out of mainstream - a sort of rebellion against the norm. During the early 20th Century, Boho was popping up all over the place until it eventually Boho became a style that is associated with free-spirited, recycled, and reclaimed and later in 2022 it became a style for anyone looking to incorporate antique or vintage in combination with recycled accessories in their homes.

Modern Classic is not a new style and has been around just as long as Boho but it has gained more prominence over the years by those wanting to decorate their homes with a combination of modern furniture and classic timelessness. Modern classic is an interior design aesthetic that embraces function and simplicity. It is clean lines, comfortable yet luxurious furniture and classic elements that scream sophistication but not necessarily the high-end price tag.

Elements of Modern Classic Interior Design - On a Budget

Want to achieve an effortless Modern Classic look for your home but don't want to spend a fortune? Keep the following design guides in mind:

  • Select a soothing colour palette for rooms that incorporates organic neutrals and tranquil hues. Think calming off-whites and subdued grey or light brown colours, or add a cooling touch with the palest blue and green. Pop into Builders or your local paint store to view samples of colours and take these home to try them out at home under different lighting situations.
  • Favour natural materials in all aspects of decorating the room from furniture to decor accessories to textiles. There is nothing more beautiful than the raw magnetism of metal, the strength of concrete or the organic beauty of wood and pair any or all of these with materials such as hemp, cotton or linen, coir or other non-synthetic textiles. And the beauty of metal, concrete or wood is that they are all materials that you can work with yourself to create unique pieces for your home.
  • Arrange rooms with furniture and accessories that offer clean lines with zero clutter and maintain each area within the space clearly defined according to its purpose. You want to achieve a space that is harmonious and balanced and in line with your lifestyle. The easiest way to obtain ideas is to go online and get onto social media. My go-to source for information these days is Instagram and TikTok.
  • Incorporate elegance with sophisticated touches such as art, mirrors and classic lighting elements. This does not need to be high-end elegance and most budget-wise home decor stores stock a variety of products that will meet the criteria. If you don't find what you are looking for, consider taking the DIY option and making it yourself.

Nothing is stopping you from decorating your home in modern classic and, with clever shopping and perhaps a few DIY skills, you can do a lot for very little cost.
